After I visited Brasil, I wanted to go to Portugal. I thought it would be interesting to visit the country that colonized what is now the largest country in South America. I had also heard it was pretty affordable to visit there, so I thought it would be a logical next step!
I did some preliminary research on the internet, and decided to purchase a travel guide, to have a tangible copy, and more accurate information. During my research, I found out a lot about the history of Portugal, including the remaining influences from when the Islamic Moors ruled the region, and the first seafaring accomplishments that gave way to the European expansion. To my surprise, I discovered that there was a lot of history to see, in Portugal! Including the site of the first African slave market, in Lagos, Portugal. I knew that would be a must see. Once I determined the other cities I wanted to visit, I familiarized myself with the transportation system, and got an idea of the costs and distances between various cities, and the feasibility of it all. The bus system there (and I believe in Europe, in general) is affordable, and efficient.
I managed to see 5 cities in about 9 days, it was a lot of fun. As I had hoped, and as per my write-up on the Motivation page, I made new friends to make the trip that much more special. Fortunately, one of them had a rental car, and invited me to take a trip to a couple sites and cities that were on my list, too. So that could not have worked out more perfectly!
